Quick answer: HPV 52 is a high-risk genotype included in the 9-valent vaccine. Repeat positivity and the Pap smear result both matter for follow-up.

What does an HPV 52 positive result mean?
HPV 52 is an important carcinogenic genotype and has shown notable persistence in recent cohort studies. Population-level persistence rates should not be read as an individual probability.
HPV 52 positive but Pap smear normal
For HPV 16/18-negative HPV 52 positivity, 2025 extended-genotyping guidance supports cytology or approved dual-stain triage, with the next step determined by that result and prior history.
What if it is positive again?
The same individually reported HPV 52 genotype on repeat testing is clinically more informative than one isolated positive result.
How should grouped laboratory results be read?
A previous generic “other high-risk HPV” result does not prove HPV 52 was present at that earlier time.
Is HPV 52 covered by vaccination?
HPV 52 is included in the 9-valent HPV vaccine. Vaccination does not clear a current HPV 52 infection.
When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?
Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, prior screening, previous CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
