Quick answer: HPV 59 is a high-risk genotype. A result containing HPV 59 should be read together with any other positive genotype and the Pap smear result.

What does an HPV 59 positive result mean?
HPV 59 belongs to the carcinogenic high-risk group. Its average long-term risk is lower than HPV 16 and some other genotypes, but that does not make follow-up unnecessary.
HPV 59 positive but Pap smear normal
When only the 56/59/66 group is positive in a primary HPV-screening context and no other carcinogenic type is present, one-year HPV-based repeat testing is often the recommended pathway in the 2025 extended-genotyping guidance.
What if it is positive again?
If HPV 59 is individually reported twice, persistence can be considered. If the test reports only 56/59/66, the same grouped channel on repeat testing does not identify the persistent type.
How should grouped laboratory results be read?
If HPV 59 appears alongside HPV 16 or 18, management is not determined by the lower-priority type alone; the whole report must be interpreted.
Is HPV 59 covered by vaccination?
HPV 59 is not directly targeted by the 9-valent vaccine.
When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?
Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, prior screening, previous CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
