HPV 11 positive means that a low-risk HPV type associated with genital warts was detected. Recurrent warts do not by themselves indicate cancer. Visible lesions, other HPV findings and your cervical screening history should be assessed together.
What does low-risk HPV 11 mean?
HPV 11 is not in the same category as the principal high-risk HPV types associated with cervical cancer. Low-risk does not mean that every genital lump can safely be ignored. HPV 11 and HPV 6 are associated with warts, while a concurrent HPV 16 or 18 result requires separate consideration. Detection alone is not a diagnosis of abnormal cervical cells.
Why can genital warts come back after treatment?
Treatment targets visible warts and does not prove that all HPV has been eliminated. Warts can recur after apparently successful treatment. Recurrence is not automatically evidence of poor treatment or cancer. A review considers the previous method, healing and the location of new lesions. Warts that fail to respond or change in appearance need reassessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
What changes during pregnancy?
Genital warts may grow or bleed more easily during pregnancy. Some wart medicines should not be used in pregnancy, so treatment needs individual review with the obstetric clinician. An HPV 11 result alone does not determine the mode of delivery. Lesions obstructing the birth canal or likely to cause substantial bleeding require a separate obstetric assessment.
Do I need a cervical procedure if my Pap result is normal?
A Pap test examines cells; an HPV test detects viral types. HPV 11 alone is not an automatic reason for colposcopy, biopsy or LEEP. Abnormal cytology, a concurrent high-risk HPV type, suspicious examination findings or a history of significant cervical disease may change management. Assessing external warts and screening the cervix have different purposes.
Is HPV 11 included in the vaccine?
Quadrivalent and nine-valent vaccines cover HPV 11, but vaccination does not treat an existing wart or infection. Cervical screening remains necessary after vaccination. Possible benefit after a previous positive HPV result depends on age, vaccination history and individual circumstances; it should not be presented as a guarantee of clearing that infection.
When should I arrange a review sooner?
Bleeding, ulceration, firmness, a marked colour change or continued growth despite treatment warrants assessment. Not every genital lesion is a wart. Bring complete test reports, medication details and records of previous procedures. This helps distinguish a recurrent lesion from a different condition and avoids unnecessary repeat interventions.
