Pregnancy guide · Şişli, Istanbul
Burning behind the breastbone and acid coming into the mouth are common reflux symptoms in pregnancy. Hormonal changes and pressure on the stomach can contribute. Everyday adjustments may help, while persistent symptoms deserve an individual treatment plan.
What can help at home?
Try smaller meals, avoid lying down straight after eating and leave about three hours between your last meal and bedtime. Raising your head and shoulders in bed may help. Reduce foods and drinks that clearly trigger your symptoms, rather than unnecessarily restricting your whole diet.
Can I use medicines?
Some antacids and alginates can be used in pregnancy; persistent symptoms may need a different acid-suppressing treatment. Products are not interchangeable. Tell your doctor or pharmacist that you are pregnant and share your current medicines and health conditions.
Antacids can interfere with iron and folic acid absorption. A gap of at least two hours is generally advised; confirm the instructions for your particular treatment. Do not stop prescribed medication without advice.
When should I arrange assessment?
Difficulty swallowing, weight loss, repeated vomiting or symptoms that disrupt eating need review. Not every chest or upper abdominal pain is reflux. Severe upper abdominal pain with headache or visual disturbance needs urgent obstetric assessment.
For your appointment, note the timing of symptoms, their relationship to meals, night-time waking and any products you have tried. You can discuss these during antenatal care in Istanbul.
Common questions
Should I cut out every possible trigger food?
No. Focus on foods that worsen your own symptoms while maintaining a balanced diet.
Does heartburn tell me whether my baby is healthy?
No. Heartburn is not a measure of fetal wellbeing or a substitute for antenatal assessment.
