Pregnancy guide · Şişli, Istanbul
Constipation can mean hard stools, straining, infrequent bowel movements or feeling incompletely emptied. Pregnancy-related hormonal changes, less activity and some medicines may contribute. Diet, fluids and bowel habits should be considered together.
What changes may help?
Increase fibre gradually through vegetables, fruit, whole grains and pulses, alongside adequate fluids. A sudden increase in fibre may worsen bloating. Follow your own clinician’s advice if a health condition limits your fluid intake.
Gentle regular movement, when medically appropriate, and allowing unhurried time for the toilet can help. Avoid repeatedly delaying the urge to open your bowels.
What if iron seems to be the cause?
Some iron products can worsen bowel symptoms. Do not stop treatment for iron deficiency on your own. Your clinician can review the preparation, dose, schedule and blood results. Bring a list of all medicines and supplements, including non-prescription products.
Are laxatives an option?
If lifestyle measures are insufficient, pregnancy-compatible laxatives may be considered. Bulk-forming products and, when needed, osmotic options such as lactulose or macrogol are among the choices. The right product depends on your symptoms and medical history.
Herbal detox products and unsupervised enemas should not be treated as automatically safe. Seek advice for persistent symptoms, rectal pain or bleeding, and discuss them at your pregnancy follow-up.
Common questions
Must I open my bowels every day?
No. Your usual pattern, stool consistency, straining and discomfort matter more than a single daily target.
Should abdominal pain be assumed to be constipation?
No. Severe, persistent or increasing pain needs assessment, particularly with vomiting, fever or inability to pass gas.
