Bartholin Cyst TreatmentŞişli · Nişantaşı · Istanbul

Treatment depends on discomfort, infection, cyst size and previous episodes. A small symptom-free cyst may be observed. A painful cyst or abscess may need drainage, a Word catheter or marsupialisation.

Does every Bartholin cyst need a procedure?

A small, uncomplicated cyst that causes no symptoms may not require immediate surgery. If observation is chosen, you should know which changes require another assessment. A large swelling that interferes with walking or sitting, repeatedly returns or has an uncertain diagnosis needs a different discussion. Age and menopausal status also matter.

What is the purpose of a Word catheter?

After fluid or pus has been drained, a small balloon-tipped catheter may be placed to prevent the opening from closing too quickly. It generally remains for several weeks, often around four weeks, depending on healing. This can be an option under local anaesthesia. Device availability and the appropriate setting for your procedure need to be confirmed during consultation.

What is marsupialisation?

The cyst or abscess is drained and the edges of the opening are stitched to help maintain drainage. It may be considered for recurrent episodes or when a catheter is unsuitable. Local or general anaesthesia is selected according to the swelling and your circumstances. Benefits are discussed alongside the possibility of pain, bleeding, infection and recurrence.

Are antibiotics enough on their own?

Antibiotics are not routinely necessary for every cyst or after every drainage procedure. Surrounding skin infection, fever or systemic symptoms, certain medical conditions and a diagnosed sexually transmitted infection can influence the decision. Antibiotics do not replace drainage when an abscess needs that treatment. Allergies and pregnancy must be considered before prescribing.

Is there one best or guaranteed treatment?

No single method is best for everyone or guarantees that a cyst will never return. Word catheter placement and marsupialisation are both established options. Fluid may reaccumulate after needle aspiration or drainage that does not maintain an opening. Repeated episodes or a suspicious mass may prompt discussion of gland excision. The plan should include recovery and follow-up as well as relief of the immediate symptoms.

No. Other vulvar conditions can look similar. An examination is needed to establish the cause and select an appropriate plan.
