Pregnancy guide · Şişli, Istanbul
A gestational sac may become visible on vaginal ultrasound around five weeks, with an embryo and cardiac activity often seen around six to seven weeks. These are approximate timings, not deadlines for diagnosing a miscarriage.
What does an early scan assess?
The scan looks at pregnancy location, the gestational sac, yolk sac, embryo and relevant measurements. A vaginal scan may provide clearer detail than an abdominal scan at this stage. Dates based on the last period can be inaccurate when ovulation occurred later than expected.
Positive test but no visible pregnancy
The pregnancy may be too early to see, may be resolving, or may be ectopic. “Pregnancy of unknown location” describes this uncertainty; it is not a final diagnosis. Symptoms, serial beta-hCG results and repeat imaging guide the next step.
Why might a repeat scan be needed?
An absent heartbeat on a very early scan does not automatically mean miscarriage. Measurements, the scan method and the time since the previous scan matter. An uncertain vaginal scan commonly requires at least seven days before reassessment; abdominal scans may require a longer interval. Your clinician should set the timing.
Do not wait for the planned scan if new or worsening symptoms occur. Bring all previous scan reports and blood results, including dates and units, to your pregnancy appointment.
Common questions
Does an empty-looking sac always mean miscarriage?
No. A very early scan may look empty. Appropriate measurements and follow-up are needed before diagnosing an anembryonic pregnancy.
Is vaginal ultrasound safe?
A medically indicated vaginal ultrasound is not known to increase miscarriage risk. The procedure should be explained and performed with your consent.
