HPV 53 Positive: Risk, Normal Pap and HPV 52 Differences

Op. Dr. Alparslan Demir · Obstetrics and Gynaecology · Şişli, Istanbul

HPV 53 positive is not the same finding as HPV 52 positive. HPV 53 is classified by IARC in Group 2B, while HPV 52 belongs to a different risk category. Detecting HPV 53 alone does not diagnose cancer or a lesion requiring treatment.

How is HPV 53 different from HPV 52?

Despite their similar numbers, these are separate genotypes. HPV 52 is classified in Group 1 and is included in the nine-valent vaccine. HPV 53 is in Group 2B and is not directly covered by that vaccine. A larger type number does not mean a more advanced or dangerous infection. Check the exact number on the complete laboratory report.

How concerning is an HPV 53 result?

Group 2B means possibly carcinogenic; it is not a personal cancer diagnosis or a numerical prediction of what will happen. Evidence and pathways for HPV 16/18 should not simply be applied to HPV 53. Cytology, other detected types, previous cervical disease and immune status matter when assessing an individual result. A risk percentage found online cannot reliably replace that review.

Can HPV 53 be positive when the Pap result is normal?

Yes. HPV testing and cytology measure different things. A normal Pap result indicates that no relevant cellular abnormality was found in the examined sample. It can coexist with a positive HPV result. Neither HPV 53 positivity nor a normal Pap result should be interpreted without the full history. High-grade cytology, suspicious examination findings or previous significant cervical disease may change management.

Does another HPV 53 positive test prove persistence?

Repeated detection of the same type over time can be relevant, but the tests and sampling details need comparison. If the earlier assay did not test for HPV 53, a later positive result cannot be compared directly with the previous negative label. Review the dates, assay coverage and cellular findings. A positive result should not automatically be described as a newly acquired infection.

Can a medicine or vaccination clear HPV 53?

It is not appropriate to promise that a medicine or vaccine will eradicate an established HPV 53 infection. Assessment and treatment of a detected cervical lesion are separate matters. The nine-valent vaccine does not directly include HPV 53, although possible prevention of other types can be discussed. Follow-up should be based on the complete findings, rather than a fixed interval assigned to the number alone.

What information is useful at review?

Bring all pages of the genotyping report, the Pap result and any previous biopsy or LEEP report. A cropped screenshot saying ’53 positive’ often leaves out details needed to choose a sensible next step.
