Short answer: There is no single week when every pregnant patient needs a 3D or 4D ultrasound. Timing depends on the clinical question and imaging conditions. A three-dimensional image does not replace a detailed fetal anatomy scan.
Are 3D, 4D and detailed ultrasound the same?
2D ultrasound produces cross-sectional images. 3D ultrasound can combine these into a volume image; 4D displays three-dimensional images over time. “Detailed ultrasound” describes the scope of the examination, while “3D/4D” describes an imaging technique. A clear image of the baby’s face does not mean that all organs have been systematically assessed.
When can 3D ultrasound be performed?
Volume imaging may be useful at different stages of pregnancy, depending on the clinical question. Surface views of the face depend on fetal position, fluid in front of the face and structures that may obstruct the view. Reaching a particular week does not guarantee a clear image.
The routine second-trimester anatomy assessment is generally planned around 18–22 weeks, with the actual timing guided by the clinician and local screening pathway. A medically necessary scan should not be postponed while waiting for a better facial image. Read the level 2 ultrasound guide.
What is the role of the Voluson E8?
The practice uses a Voluson E8 for obstetric ultrasound, including 2D examination and volume imaging when appropriate. Equipment supports clinical assessment. Examiner experience, a suitable examination plan and imaging conditions also matter. No ultrasound system can guarantee exclusion of every fetal abnormality.
What if the baby’s face cannot be seen?
The baby may be facing the uterine wall or have hands in front of the face. An incomplete facial surface image alone is not a diagnosis. The clinician will explain whether the medical assessment is complete and arrange follow-up if necessary anatomical views are missing. Scanning should not be unnecessarily prolonged solely to obtain keepsake images.
What should a useful ultrasound visit answer?
Before the examination, explain whether you are attending for routine pregnancy follow-up, an incomplete previous scan or a specific finding. Bring the written report rather than relying only on a photograph or video of the baby. Ask which anatomical views have been assessed, whether any remain incomplete and what follow-up is recommended. The clinical report and follow-up plan matter more than the appearance of a facial image.
How do ultrasound and prenatal screening fit together?
A reassuring image does not answer every question about a pregnancy. Ultrasound and prenatal screening have different purposes. If you already have screening results, bring them with your ultrasound records so that they can be considered together. Our English prenatal testing guide explains screening results and the distinction between screening and diagnosis.
Planning an appointment in Şişli
When requesting an appointment, tell the assistant your pregnancy week, your preferred language and whether another clinician has requested a particular examination. This helps clarify the purpose of the visit before you travel. Our practice is in Şişli; it is not a separate clinic in Kağıthane, Gültepe or Levent. See the international patient appointment guide for contact information.
Preparing for your appointment
- Bring previous ultrasound reports and pregnancy records.
- State your gestational age and the reason for the examination when booking.
- Follow the practice’s instructions about bladder filling or other preparation.
- Ask what the examination covers and how the findings will be explained.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone need a 3D or 4D scan?
No. Necessary scans are chosen according to the pregnancy. 3D imaging can help answer selected clinical questions but is not a mandatory screening test for every pregnancy.
Does a normal 3D scan rule out every condition?
No. Ultrasound cannot exclude every structural, genetic or developmental condition. Findings must be interpreted with the medical history and other assessments.
Does 3D or 4D ultrasound use radiation?
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than X-rays. It should still be used for a medical reason, with appropriate settings and the shortest exposure needed for the examination.
Is the practice in Kağıthane, Gültepe or Levent?
The practice is in Şişli. Patients travelling from neighbouring districts can find appointment information in the international patient guide.
