HPV 39 Positive: Persistent Infection | Şişli, Nişantaşı, Istanbul

Quick answer: HPV 39 is a high-risk carcinogenic genotype. Lower risk than HPV 16 in some cohorts does not make it a “low-risk HPV type.”

What does an HPV 39 positive result mean?

The phrase “lower genotype-specific risk” is a comparison within carcinogenic HPV types. It should not be confused with low-risk wart-associated types such as HPV 6 or 11.

HPV 39 positive but Pap smear normal

A normal Pap smear means no cytological abnormality was identified in that sample; it does not make a positive HPV 39 result irrelevant. Triage depends on the screening method and prior history.

What if it is positive again?

If one report says 35/39/68 and a later report says HPV 39, the first report cannot automatically be relabelled as HPV 39.

How should grouped laboratory results be read?

Some assays group HPV 35, 39 and 68. The group result provides less genotype resolution than an individually reported HPV 39 result.

Is HPV 39 covered by vaccination?

HPV 39 is not directly targeted by the 9-valent vaccine.

When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?

Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on the genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, previous screening, prior CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
