HPV 51 Positive: Pap and Colposcopy | Şişli, Nişantaşı, Istanbul

Quick answer: HPV 51 is a high-risk genotype. Its result should be interpreted with cytology, prior screening and treatment history rather than from the type number alone.

What does an HPV 51 positive result mean?

Long-term cohorts generally place HPV 51 below HPV 16, 31 and 33/58 in genotype-specific precancer risk, but it remains a carcinogenic high-risk type.

HPV 51 positive but Pap smear normal

For HPV 16/18-negative HPV 51 positivity, current extended-genotyping guidance supports cytology or approved dual-stain triage. A high-grade cytology result is not made less important because the genotype is HPV 51.

What if it is positive again?

If HPV 51 is individually reported on appropriately timed repeat tests, persistence becomes an additional risk factor. A single positive result does not define persistence.

How should grouped laboratory results be read?

If the laboratory only reports “other high-risk HPV,” the result cannot be retrospectively labelled as HPV 51 without individual genotyping.

Is HPV 51 covered by vaccination?

HPV 51 is not directly targeted by the 9-valent vaccine. Vaccination may still protect against covered types not previously acquired.

When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?

Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, prior screening, previous CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
