Quick answer: HPV 58 is a high-risk genotype included in the 9-valent vaccine. A grouped 33/58 result is not the same as an individually reported HPV 58 result.

What does an HPV 58 positive result mean?
HPV 58 is one of the non-16/18 genotypes associated with meaningful precancer risk, and recent studies have also highlighted persistence. These findings are population-level, not a personal prognosis.
HPV 58 positive but Pap smear normal
For HPV 16/18-negative 33/58-positive results, 2025 guidance supports cytology or approved dual-stain triage.
What if it is positive again?
Repeated individual HPV 58 positivity is consistent with persistence. Repeated 33/58 grouped positivity cannot identify which member of the pair persisted.
How should grouped laboratory results be read?
If the assay reports 33/58 together, do not interpret the result as definite HPV 58 unless the laboratory separately identifies it.
Is HPV 58 covered by vaccination?
HPV 58 is included in the 9-valent vaccine. The vaccine is preventive, not a treatment for current infection.
When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?
Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, prior screening, previous CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
