HPV 68 Positive: Grouped Results | Şişli, Nişantaşı, Istanbul

Quick answer: HPV 68 is a high-risk genotype that may appear in a 35/39/68 grouped test channel. IARC terminology is an evidence classification, not a cancer stage or personal risk score.

What does an HPV 68 positive result mean?

HPV 68 has been classified by IARC in Group 2A (probably carcinogenic). This does not mean cancer is present and should not be confused with CIN2 or a cancer stage.

HPV 68 positive but Pap smear normal

For HPV 16/18-negative 35/39/68 positivity, current extended-genotyping guidance uses cytology or approved dual-stain triage to refine the next step.

What if it is positive again?

A repeated 35/39/68 grouped result does not prove HPV 68 itself persisted. Individual genotype resolution is required for that conclusion.

How should grouped laboratory results be read?

If the assay reports 35/39/68 together, the result indicates at least one target in that group was detected; it should not automatically be rewritten as HPV 68.

Is HPV 68 covered by vaccination?

HPV 68 is not directly targeted by the 9-valent vaccine.

When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?

Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, prior screening, previous CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
