What Causes a Bartholin Cyst?Şişli · Nişantaşı · Istanbul
The main mechanism is blockage of the gland’s drainage duct. The reason for that blockage is not always clear. A cyst alone does not establish a sexually transmitted infection or a hygiene problem.

What happens when a duct becomes blocked?
The gland can continue producing fluid even when its outlet narrows or closes. Retained fluid may create a small cyst that enlarges, stays stable or becomes smaller after draining. Infection or local inflammation may be involved, but a single trigger is not always identifiable. Previous swelling or procedures on the same side are useful details to discuss.
Does sexual intercourse cause it?
Friction and pressure during sex can make an existing swelling uncomfortable. However, a cyst does not reveal someone’s sexual history, identify a source of infection or prove anything about a partner. Vulvar lumps can also occur in people who have never had sexual intercourse. The diagnosis should be based on examination rather than assumptions.
Is a Bartholin abscess sexually transmitted?
An abscess can involve several types of bacteria, including organisms normally found on the skin or in the bowel. Testing for infections such as gonorrhoea or chlamydia may be appropriate in some situations. Symptoms, exposure history and examination guide that decision. Partner treatment is not automatic for a cyst; it depends on whether a specific infection is identified.
Is it the same as HPV, thrush or an ingrown hair?
A Bartholin cyst is not an HPV wart. Thrush, folliculitis, skin cysts and other vulvar conditions are separate possibilities. A superficial bump after hair removal and a deeper swelling at the lower vaginal entrance need different assessments. A photograph alone may not reliably distinguish them.
Can future cysts be prevented?
There is no daily-care method that reliably prevents every new cyst. Avoiding irritating products may improve comfort but cannot guarantee that a blocked duct will open. Recurrent swelling on the same side calls for a review of previous treatment and healing. Procedures that maintain a drainage opening may then be considered.

Is this information enough to diagnose my lump?
No. Other vulvar conditions can look similar. An examination is needed to establish the cause and select an appropriate plan.
