Pregnancy guide · Şişli, Istanbul
A chemical, or biochemical, pregnancy is a very early loss detected by a positive pregnancy test before the pregnancy can be confirmed on ultrasound. It is a real pregnancy loss, and it can be emotionally difficult even when it happens very early.
What might you notice?
A test may become positive and later turn negative, followed by bleeding around or after the expected period. Test-line darkness is not a reliable measure of progress. Different kits, urine concentration and reading times can change how a line looks.
Why is follow-up important?
Falling beta-hCG can suggest a pregnancy that is not continuing. If its location was never confirmed, an ectopic pregnancy still needs consideration. The end of bleeding does not automatically mean that follow-up is complete.
Your clinician may arrange repeat blood or urine testing and, when appropriate, ultrasound. Bring the full results with their dates rather than photographs of test lines alone.
Treatment and planning another pregnancy
Many very early losses resolve without a procedure. Persistent positive tests, continuing bleeding or increasing pain need reassessment. Progesterone, aspirin and blood thinners are not routine treatment for everyone.
A single early loss does not mean you cannot have a successful future pregnancy. Discuss follow-up completion, recovery, any medicines used and emotional readiness before trying again. Tell your doctor about previous losses so further assessment can be considered individually.
Common questions
Is this the same as a false positive?
Usually not: pregnancy hormone was detected, but the pregnancy ended very early. Other explanations are considered where relevant.
Can I stop follow-up when bleeding stops?
Follow the agreed plan, particularly if pregnancy location was never confirmed. Further testing may still be needed.
