Pregnancy guide · Şişli, Istanbul
An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the uterine cavity, most often in a fallopian tube. It can cause internal bleeding and needs timely assessment. Pain or a single hCG result cannot establish the diagnosis alone.
Which symptoms need attention?
One-sided lower abdominal pain, spotting or vaginal bleeding may occur after a missed period. Some people initially have few or no symptoms. A lack of bleeding does not exclude an ectopic pregnancy.
Tell your clinician about a previous ectopic pregnancy, tubal surgery, pelvic infection or fertility treatment. Ectopic pregnancy can also occur without a known risk factor.
How is the diagnosis made?
Clinical assessment, usually a vaginal ultrasound, and sometimes serial beta-hCG measurements are considered together. A positive test without a visible pregnancy can mean it is too early to see. Follow-up is needed until the uncertainty is resolved.
A rising hCG does not prove that the pregnancy is inside the uterus. Falling hCG does not make new or worsening symptoms safe to ignore.
What treatment might be offered?
Options can include close observation in selected stable patients, methotrexate treatment when appropriate, or surgery. Symptoms, scan findings, hormone levels, bleeding risk and reliable access to follow-up guide the choice. Suspected rupture or significant internal bleeding may require emergency surgery.
After treatment, complete the monitoring plan and discuss when it is safe to try for another pregnancy. In a future pregnancy, contact your clinician early so ultrasound can check the location.
