Vaginal Discharge in Pregnancy: What Needs Checking?

Pregnancy guide · Şişli, Istanbul

Pregnancy care · Türkçe

An increase in vaginal discharge is common in pregnancy. Thin, clear or milky discharge without an unpleasant smell or irritation can be normal. New odour, itching, pain, bleeding or watery leakage needs assessment.

Can colour identify an infection?

Colour alone cannot establish a diagnosis. New yellow or green discharge, an unpleasant smell, itching or burning may suggest infection. White discharge is not automatically thrush. Pink or brown discharge may contain blood and should be discussed with your clinician.

Could it be amniotic fluid?

A gush or repeated watery trickle may be leaking amniotic fluid. Smell, colour or looking at a pad cannot reliably distinguish this at home. Suspected waters breaking needs prompt obstetric assessment, especially before 37 weeks or with contractions or bleeding.

Examination and any fluid tests are interpreted alongside the whole clinical picture. Even leakage that stops may still need checking.

What happens at the appointment?

Your pregnancy week, onset of symptoms, associated pain or itching, recent antibiotics and previous test results help guide assessment. A sample may be taken when appropriate. Not everyone needs the same tests or treatment.

Do not automatically repeat an old antibiotic or vaginal treatment. Medication suitability in pregnancy and whether a partner needs treatment depend on the diagnosis.

What can I do meanwhile?

Avoid vaginal douching and perfumed products. Clean the external area gently and change damp clothing. These measures do not replace assessment for persistent symptoms. For non-urgent follow-up, see pregnancy care in Istanbul.

Common questions

Does no itching mean no infection?

No. Odour, changes in discharge, urinary symptoms and the examination may still be relevant.

Can I wait if watery leakage has stopped?

If you suspect your waters have broken, seek assessment rather than relying on the leakage stopping.
