Quick answer: HPV 31 is an important high-risk genotype outside HPV 16 and 18. A 16/18-negative report is not “clear” if HPV 31 is detected.

What does an HPV 31 positive result mean?
Long-term genotype studies place HPV 31 among the more important non-16/18 types for cervical precancer risk. This is population-level evidence, not a personal cancer probability.
HPV 31 positive but Pap smear normal
In 2025 extended-genotyping guidance, HPV 31 positive / HPV 16-18 negative results are triaged with cytology or an approved p16/Ki-67 dual-stain strategy where available. The next step depends on that result and prior history.
What if it is positive again?
The same HPV 31 genotype detected on repeat testing is more informative than a single positive result. The laboratory must actually report individual genotypes before persistence can be claimed.
How should grouped laboratory results be read?
If an earlier report only said “other high-risk HPV,” it cannot be assumed that HPV 31 was present then.
Is HPV 31 covered by vaccination?
HPV 31 is included in the 9-valent vaccine. Vaccination does not treat a current infection.
When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?
Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on the genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, previous screening, prior CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
