Quick answer: HPV 33 is a high-risk genotype. A grouped 33/58 positive result does not prove that both HPV 33 and HPV 58 are present.

What does an HPV 33 positive result mean?
HPV 33 is one of the non-16/18 genotypes that can carry meaningful long-term precancer risk. Its genotype number must not be confused with a CIN grade.
HPV 33 positive but Pap smear normal
For HPV 16/18-negative 33/58-positive results, 2025 guidance supports triage with cytology or approved dual stain. High-grade cytology such as HSIL or ASC-H is not downgraded because the HPV type is 33 rather than 16.
What if it is positive again?
If a test reports only the combined 33/58 channel, repeated positivity of that channel does not prove the same individual genotype persisted.
How should grouped laboratory results be read?
33/58 is a reporting channel used by some assays. It may mean at least one of the two types is detected, not necessarily both.
Is HPV 33 covered by vaccination?
HPV 33 is included in the 9-valent vaccine.
When can colposcopy or biopsy become relevant?
Colposcopy and biopsy decisions are based on the genotype, cytology or dual-stain result where appropriate, previous screening, prior CIN2/3 treatment and the clinical context. HPV genotype alone is not a biopsy diagnosis.
