STI / STD Testing in Istanbul

Sexual health · Şişli, Istanbul

Looking for STI or STD testing in Istanbul? Your visit starts with a discussion of your concerns, any symptoms, previous results and the timing of a possible exposure. Dr. Alparslan Demir offers gynecological consultations in English in Şişli.

You do not need to select a laboratory panel before the appointment. The aim is to choose tests that answer a clinical question and explain what each result can and cannot show.

Which STI tests might be discussed?

Swab or urine tests

Depending on your history and symptoms, testing may be considered for infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea. The sample type and collection site depend on the infection and exposure being assessed.

Blood tests

HIV, syphilis and hepatitis testing may form part of a plan when indicated. Blood tests and genital PCR panels answer different questions; one does not automatically replace the other.

A larger panel is not automatically a more appropriate panel. Ask which infections are included, why they are being tested for and whether any important tests are separate.

Do I need symptoms to be tested?

Some STIs cause no symptoms. Whether testing is appropriate depends on your age, sexual history, exposure, pregnancy status and previous results. If you have discharge, burning, sores or pelvic pain, mention these when arranging the visit.

When should I test after a possible exposure?

There is no single window period for every STI. The infection, laboratory method and sample site matter. Testing too early can miss an infection, so an initial negative result may need a planned repeat. If you have symptoms, seek assessment now rather than waiting for a testing window to end.

Possible HIV exposure within the last 72 hours: seek urgent assessment at an emergency department or infectious diseases service for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). When indicated, PEP should begin as soon as possible within that period. Do not wait for a routine appointment, a WhatsApp reply or a test result. CDC: HIV PEP.

After treatment, a test of cure and a later test for reinfection are separate decisions. Your clinician will explain which is needed and when; testing immediately after antibiotics is not a reliable universal way to confirm cure.

How should I prepare?

  • Bring previous laboratory reports and a list of medicines, including recent antibiotics.
  • If relevant, note the approximate exposure date and when symptoms began.
  • Ask the practice whether the planned sample requires specific preparation; do not stop prescribed medicine on your own.
  • Discuss how you would like to receive results and whether you will be leaving Istanbul soon.

What happens after the result?

The report is interpreted alongside your history and symptoms. Depending on the infection, treatment, further testing or partner assessment may be needed. Agree on the follow-up plan rather than treating an isolated laboratory result yourself.

HPV testing and Pap smears have a different role in cervical screening. See the HPV, Pap smear and colposcopy guide. For a broader preventive visit, see women’s health check-ups.

Questions before booking

Can I ask for one specific test?

Yes. Bring the name of the test or the report you were given. The consultation can clarify whether it answers your concern and whether the sample or timing needs adjustment.

Will all results be ready on the same day?

Turnaround depends on the selected test and laboratory. Confirm the expected timing before collection, particularly if you are travelling.

What does the fee include?

Ask separately about the consultation, sample collection, laboratory tests and result review. The scope should be clear before tests are arranged.
