Pregnancy guide · Şişli, Istanbul
An anembryonic pregnancy is an early pregnancy loss in which the gestational sac develops without a developing embryo. However, an apparently empty sac on a very early scan is not enough to make the diagnosis.
Why can the first scan be uncertain?
Later ovulation or uncertain period dates can make the pregnancy younger than expected. Sac measurements, the yolk sac, any visible embryo and the scan method all matter. Read more about early ultrasound findings.
A repeat scan at an appropriate interval, and sometimes a second opinion, is needed before a diagnosis is confirmed. A last-period calculation or one blood hCG result is not sufficient on its own.
Can I still feel pregnant?
Yes. Pregnancy tissue may continue producing hormones, so nausea, breast tenderness or a positive test can persist. Symptoms do not reliably establish whether an embryo is developing.
What happens after confirmation?
Depending on your clinical condition, options may include waiting for the loss to complete, medicines, or a procedure to remove pregnancy tissue. Bleeding, possible infection, your preferences and access to follow-up influence the choice. Ask what symptoms to expect and when to seek help.
Early pregnancy loss often relates to chromosomal problems at the start of development. It is generally not caused by an ordinary activity you did. One loss does not mean the next pregnancy will have the same outcome. Previous losses and your health history should be discussed when planning future care.
Common questions
Can nausea continue with an anembryonic pregnancy?
Yes. Hormone production and symptoms can continue for a time, even when the pregnancy is not developing.
Is surgery always necessary?
No. Once the diagnosis is certain, expectant, medical and surgical approaches may be discussed according to your circumstances.
