IUD GUIDE / COPPER BALL DEVICE
What is the Ballerine intrauterine ball?
IUB Ballerine is a hormone-free contraceptive device with copper beads on a flexible frame that takes a rounded shape inside the uterus. It may be described as a copper ball IUD, an intrauterine ball or a bead coil.
Dr. Alparslan Demir provides consultation about Ballerine at his Şişli practice. Any fitting decision depends on individual suitability and verification of the exact product’s current instructions, local status and availability.
How does Ballerine differ from GyneFix?
GyneFix is a frameless copper chain anchored in the muscle at the top of the uterus. Ballerine has a frame that forms a rounded shape and does not use that anchoring method. Their insertion and removal techniques are different.
A description such as “bead coil” can be ambiguous. Always identify the brand and model, especially if you are arranging removal of an existing device.
Does a rounded shape mean that it is safer?
The shape alone is not proof of less pain, lighter bleeding or fewer complications. The comparison should include independent clinical evidence, current instructions for use and your own medical history.
An observational, single-center study has reported experience with Ballerine MIDI. That design of study does not establish that the device is superior to other IUDs for every patient.

How should historical safety reports be interpreted?
In 2021, the Dutch Health and Youth Care Inspectorate reviewed reports involving expulsion, perforation and pregnancy, alongside the device’s technical documentation and post-market surveillance. Its report describes a suspension of the CE certificate at that time.
This is a historical report about a particular regulatory setting; it does not by itself establish the product’s current status in Türkiye. Current documentation must be checked before a new fitting. If you already use Ballerine, discuss the model, symptoms and follow-up with your clinician rather than attempting removal yourself.
What is discussed before a fitting decision?
- Your preference for a hormone-free method.
- Heavy bleeding, cramps and previous IUD experiences.
- Pregnancy possibility and findings affecting the uterine cavity.
- The exact model, product documentation and replacement date.
- Potential side effects, pain relief, alternatives and follow-up.
Conventional copper and hormonal IUDs should also be part of the discussion. Device shape or branding alone should not determine the choice.
Ballerine removal and missing strings
The approach depends on whether the strings are visible and where the device is located. If strings are missing or a previous removal attempt failed, the priority is to establish the position and conditions for removal.
The IUD removal guide explains specialist office instruments, ultrasound assessment, pain relief and possible hysteroscopy. It also covers contraception before removal and symptoms requiring urgent care.
Frequently asked questions
Does Ballerine release a hormone?
No. It is a copper-based contraceptive device. Hormone-free methods can still affect bleeding and menstrual cramps.
Can its shape prevent all expulsion or perforation?
No. A rounded design does not eliminate these risks or guarantee an uncomplicated experience.
What should I bring if I already have Ballerine?
Bring the device card, approximate insertion date and any ultrasound or previous removal reports. Mention pain, altered bleeding, missing strings or a possible pregnancy when requesting an appointment.
