Choose the HPV type on your report
HPV genotypes do not all carry the same long-term risk, and they are not all managed in the same way. The type number should still be interpreted with cytology, previous screening, biopsy history and any prior treatment.
| Type | English guide | Key issue |
|---|---|---|
| 16 | HPV 16 | Colposcopy even with negative cytology in standard risk-based pathways |
| 18 | HPV 18 | Glandular/endocervical relevance |
| 31 | HPV 31 | Extended genotyping and persistence |
| 33 | HPV 33 | 33/58 grouped results |
| 35 | HPV 35 | 35/39/68 grouped results |
| 39 | HPV 39 | Grouped reporting and repeat positivity |
| 45 | HPV 45 | Glandular association; distinct from HPV 18 management |
| 51 | HPV 51 | Cytology/triage matters |
| 52 | HPV 52 | Persistence and vaccine coverage |
| 56 | HPV 56 | 56/59/66 pathway |
| 58 | HPV 58 | 33/58 grouped results and persistence |
| 59 | HPV 59 | Multiple-type results and follow-up |
| 66 | HPV 66 | Risk-label terminology and 56/59/66 grouping |
| 68 | HPV 68 | IARC terminology and 35/39/68 grouping |
Grouped channels are not the same as individual genotyping
Some validated assays report combinations such as 33/58, 35/39/68 or 56/59/66. A positive grouped channel does not mean every type in the group is present. If the assay does not separate the types, you should not retrospectively label the result as one specific genotype.
Vaccination and type coverage
The 9-valent HPV vaccine targets HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58. It does not treat an infection that is already present, and a positive result does not mean vaccination has no value for the other vaccine-covered types.
Persistence matters
The same genotype detected on appropriately timed repeat testing provides different information from a single positive result. Persistence does not equal cancer, but it contributes to risk assessment.
